Chapter Fifteen

“What did you make of him then?” Bethany asked as they entered the incident room. She was hot and sweaty from sitting out in the sun while questioning Timothy Bishway. What she wouldn’t give for a cool shower.

“He seems more upset than the parents, I saw that much. Thank God he got away from them. Bloody sad that he felt he had to hang around for his sister’s benefit, though. Got to be a good bloke to do that.”

“I thought the same.” She said hello to Fran and Leona then checked the whiteboards.

Quite a bit had been added, where Fran and Leona had trawled through social media, checked into family members, and had ticked off jobs that needed to be done. Although words were there, they didn’t lead to anything. The information was basic — no friends in common for Jason and Opal; Chelsea’s cause of death; all three’s family members, friends, that sort of thing.

She brought them up to date on the visit to the Bishway’s house, The Fiddler’s Bow, and the RSPCA centre. “So, what do you think of that?”

“I think the dad’s good for it,” Leona said. “From what you’ve said, he sounds like a right angry bastard, and if he hits the wife and has done for years, plus Timothy, too . . . I can’t believe I felt sorry for him.”

“Hmm. I’m leaning that way myself, that it’s him,” Bethany said, “but we still need to keep all options open.” She pressed her fingertips to her temples. “What’s the time?” She glanced at the clock on the wall. “Bloody hell! I thought it was only about three.” They had half an hour before calling it a day. “Did anything come of the red contact lenses?” She checked the board again in case she’d missed it. Nope, it wasn’t there.

“I’m still working on it,” Fran said. “I’ve been busy on so many things today. I need to update you on them. I haven’t had time to write it on the board yet either. I had no idea how many online retailers sold coloured lenses. I’ll have to email them all and ask if anyone bought any from them that were sent to Shadwell. We could be talking hundreds of buyers. Apparently, they’re quite popular. They’re sold in online shops all over the world.”

“Let’s hope they respond quickly,” Bethany said.

“I’ve made a list of all the online places, plus brick-and-mortar shops, and I wrote a standard letter that I’ll just paste in to all the emails.”

“Why not just blind copy, saving you the hassle of doing it over and over again? Unless there are too many email addresses, which would mark your mail as spam. So maybe do seven or eight with a few recipients on each.” Bethany walked over to the coffee machine to pour them all a drink.

Fran slapped her forehead. “Sometimes I’m so thick!”

“Not at all, you’re just overworked. You said yourself you’ve done lots of poking around today.” Bethany filled four cups. “Our brains can only cope with so much at once.
